How it works
Scammers grab voice samples from social media or voicemail and use AI to clone them. You get a call from 'your child' or 'grandchild' in trouble, asking you to send money urgently.
Red flags
- Caller refuses to answer a personal verification question
- Caller asks you not to tell other family members
- Number doesn't match your loved one's number
Real-world example
"Mom, it's me, I had an accident, I need bail money — please don't tell Dad."
What to do
- 01Hang up and call your loved one back on their normal number.
- 02Agree on a family safe word in advance for emergencies.
- 03Report to the FBI's IC3 or your local police.
