How it works
An unsolicited message offers a high-paying remote job. They onboard you fast, then either ask for personal documents to 'process payroll', send a fake check to deposit, or have you forward packages or money — making you a mule.
Red flags
- Hired without an interview
- Asked to deposit a check and wire part back
- Asked to receive packages and reship them
- Pay rate far above market for simple work
Real-world example
"Congratulations! You've been selected as a Remote Quality Specialist at $45/hour. Send a copy of your driver's license and SSN to begin onboarding."
What to do
- 01Verify the company independently — phone the main number on their official site.
- 02Never deposit a check from an employer and wire money back.
- 03Don't share ID documents until you've verified the employer.
