A perfect puppy, a deposit paid, and then a chain of surprise fees.

How it works

A polished breeder site with stolen photos takes a deposit for a pet that doesn't exist. Once you've paid, an intermediary demands more for a climate-controlled crate, pet insurance, or customs clearance — each refundable on delivery. The animal never ships.

Red flags

Breeder will only communicate by text or email
No live video call with the animal
Payment via Zelle, Cash App, gift cards, or crypto
Extra transport, crate, or insurance fees after the deposit

"Your puppy is at the airport but needs a $950 refundable climate crate before the airline will load her."

What to do

01Insist on a live video call with the animal before paying anything.
02Reverse-image search the photos — reused pictures are the giveaway.
03Buy from a breeder you can visit, or adopt from a local shelter.
04Pay with a card or method that offers chargeback protection.
