Tech support scam

A pop-up locks your browser with a frightening warning and a phone number, or a caller claims to be from Microsoft / Apple support. They ask you to install remote-access software, then 'find' fake malware and demand payment to fix it.

• Payment requested in gift cards or wire transfer

"WARNING! Your Windows computer is infected with 5 viruses. Call Microsoft Support 1-888-... immediately. Do not shut down your computer."

1. 01Close the browser tab — restart the browser if needed.
2. 02Never give remote access to anyone who calls you.
3. 03If you already gave access, disconnect, run a malware scan, change passwords, and contact your bank.
