Unpaid toll text scam

You get a text about an unpaid toll of a few dollars, with a warning about a late fee or licence suspension. The link opens a convincing copy of your toll operator's payment page. The real goal is your card number, address, and often a one-time bank code — the toll itself is never real.

• Link ending in an odd suffix like .top, .xin, .icu or .click
• Threat of a licence suspension over a $6.99 balance
• Message arrives from an email address or overseas number

"E-ZPass: You have an outstanding toll of $6.99. To avoid a $50 late fee, settle at ezpass-billing.top/pay"

1. 01Never pay from a text link. Log in to your toll account through its official app or by typing the address yourself.
2. 02Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block the sender.
3. 03If you already paid, call your bank, freeze the card, and dispute the charge.
4. 04Delete the text and block the number.
