Grandparent / family emergency scam
A panicked call claiming a grandchild is in jail or hospital and needs cash now.
How it works
The caller sobs, says 'Grandma, it's me,' and lets the victim supply the name. A second voice takes over as a lawyer or officer and asks for bail, hospital fees, or bond — in cash, gift cards, or crypto, and always in secret 'so the parents don't find out'. AI voice cloning has made the opening seconds far more convincing.
Red flags
- Caller avoids saying their own name first
- Instruction to keep it secret from the rest of the family
- Courier sent to collect cash from your door
- Payment demanded in gift cards, crypto, or wire
Real-world example
"Grandma, I was in an accident and I'm in custody. Please don't tell Mum. The lawyer needs $8,000 for bail today."
What to do
- 01Hang up and call the family member directly on their known number.
- 02Ask a question only the real person could answer.
- 03Never hand cash to a courier, however official they sound.
- 04Agree a family code word now, before you ever need it.
