All scamsImpersonation
Vishing (voice phishing)
Phone calls that impersonate your bank, Amazon, or a government agency.
How it works
Someone calls claiming to be from your bank's fraud team, Amazon, or a federal agency. They already know a detail or two about you, which makes the rest feel credible. They walk you into 'securing' your money by moving it, reading out a code, or installing an app that hands them your screen.
Red flags
- Caller asks you to move money to a 'safe account'
- You're told to stay on the line and not tell bank staff why
- Request for a code that was just texted to you
- Caller ID matches a real company — spoofing is trivial
Real-world example
"This is the fraud department at your bank. We've blocked two payments. To protect your balance, transfer it to the safe account I'm about to read out."
What to do
- 01Hang up. Call back on the number printed on your card or the official app.
- 02Use a different phone or wait five minutes — scammers can hold the line open.
- 03No real bank or agency ever asks you to move money or share a code.
- 04Report the call to your bank's fraud line and to your national fraud reporting body.
