Amazon scam call

An automated call or email claims a large Amazon order, an iPhone or a membership renewal has been charged to your account. Pressing 1 connects you to a fake 'Amazon security' agent who says your account was hacked and offers to help. Help means installing remote-access software, moving money to a 'safe account', or buying gift cards to 'secure your funds'. Amazon does not call about orders you did not place.

• A robocall about an order you never made, with a huge amount attached
• Press 1 to speak to an agent instead of checking your own account
• The agent wants remote access to your computer or phone
• Any instruction involving gift cards, crypto or a transfer to a 'safe account'

"Thank you for your Amazon order of an iPhone 15 Pro for $1,099.99. If you did not authorise this purchase, press 1 now to speak to our fraud department."

1. 01Hang up. Open the Amazon app and look at Your Orders yourself.
2. 02Never install remote-access software for someone who called you.
3. 03No genuine company will ever ask you to pay in gift cards.
4. 04Report the call to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
